EcoCycle: A Smart Waste Management Mobile Application

PT1 (1).png

Step 1: Introduction

Overview: This project focuses on the design and development of EcoCycle, a mobile application aimed at revolutionizing household waste management. EcoCycle provides users with intelligent tools to track, sort, and dispose of their waste more efficiently and sustainably, ultimately promoting better recycling habits and reducing landfill contributions. This case study details the UX design process from initial research to prototyping, focusing on creating an intuitive and impactful user experience.

Project background: The waste management industry faces significant challenges, including low recycling rates, confusion over sorting rules, and inefficient collection systems. Our target audience includes environmentally conscious individuals and families, particularly those living in urban and suburban areas, who are motivated to reduce their environmental footprint but often lack the precise knowledge or convenient tools to do so effectively. The core problem needed solving was the lack of a centralized, easy-to-use platform that provides personalized, location-specific guidance on waste sorting, collection schedules, and recycling incentives. Current solutions are often fragmented (e.g., city websites, paper calendars, general search engines), leading to user frustration, contamination of recyclables, and missed collection days.

What is cover: This case study will discuss the journey of designing EcoCycle, starting with comprehensive user research to understand current waste management behaviors and pain points. We'll then delve into the ideation phase, where we brainstorm potential solutions, followed by information architecture and user flow design to map out the app's structure. The case study will showcase our wireframing and prototyping efforts, highlighting key features and interactions. Finally, we'll cover the usability testing process and the iterations made to refine the user experience, demonstrating how a user-centered approach led to the final design of EcoCycle. My involvement spanned the entire UX process, from initial research and user interviews to wireframing, prototyping, and contributing to usability testing analysis.

Step 2: Objectives

Defining the objectives of your project is crucial for setting the direction and scope of your work. This step involves clearly outlining what you aim to achieve and how you plan to get there.

State objectives: The primary objectives for the EcoCycle app design project were:
